Memory and Book Arts

The Process
thousands of moments
countless pages
cut silhouette on antique world map with gouache, 2014 Coley
lives and memories
captured through one person's lens.
My 12" x 12", 100 page process book filled with 7 weeks of research and drawings
The process of making an artist's book requires
numerous steps and a lot of research, especially
when I am trying to capture a particular memory and moment
in history that many want to erase.

My project is almost complete and I will be posting
the process and the finished 22 karat gold leaf book,
Gold Teeth.

Walking through Clouds

I have been taking morning walks in tranquil Maryland meadows.
There is nothing more grounding than walking through clouds.

52 Weeks of Printmaking on Textiles: Week 9

Vintage Velvet, Embroidery & Silkscreens This week's book See Us is about bringing to light that which has been in the dark.
See Us,  is also the title of the main poem in the book.  I silkscreened the poem on the textile page.  When the text was dry, I hand embroidered glass beads to the page.
To further the motif of "see us" I printed many of the images with a pale ink on the dark velvet.  This created haunting, ghost-like imagery. The finished book: The poetic interweaving of rare African textiles, modern fibers, original imagery, and poetry.
