Surviving my Teen Years with Shakespeare

I became passionate about poetry in high school when I desperately needed guidance. When I needed something to make sense of the chaos others called life. There was no IG, no FB, no Internet, no cell phones, no "reach out and touch" when life quickly crumbled, leaving you alone with just the clothes on your back. Earlier this year I revisited all 154 Shakespeare Sonnets and began making textile books inspired by them. Here is Sonnet One -- Don't Get Twisted by the Bling of Youth.

Measure For Measure: Quilt Your Response

by William Shakespeare For years I wanted to create images using textiles in response to Shakespeare's plays. Measure For Measure was one of them. How much richer and more dynamic would the project be if more women were involved? So, one year ago I pitched the idea of making quilt blocks in response to Shakespeare's text to master quilter Mimi Dietrich and her group, "Mimi's Grad Class". Everyone purchased a copy of Measure For Measure and began reading and discussing the themes in the play. Then, a few months later we began making the quilt blocks. In December, the first book was completed. This is a sneak peek of the finished work. In 2024, we will continue to create more!

Tools of the Trade: Bone Folders

by Suzanne Coley Bone folders are my extra fingers when binding books and making boxes. Bone folders from my studio, Suzanne Coley #1 Teflon bone folder - used for smoothing, pressing, folding, shaping. #2, #3, #4 - antique genuine bone folders given to me by a retired master bookbinder, made in Germany - used for delicate work and conservation. #5 - wooden Potter's rib - used for difficult spots in large boxes. Great for smoothing and shaping. #6, #7 modern genuine bone folders - used for scoring and turning corners when binding books. #8 Teflon bone folder - nothing sticks to them and they don't leave marks. Bone folders are great for crisp clean folds and creases.
