100 Days of COVID-19, Day 62

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Inspired by poetry Flirtation BY RITA DOVE After all, there’s no need to say anything at first. An orange, peeled and quartered, flares like a tulip on a wedgewood plate Anything can happen. Outside the sun has rolled up her rugs and night strewn salt across the sky. My heart is humming a tune I haven’t heard in years! Quiet’s cool flesh— let’s sniff and eat it. There are ways to make of the moment a topiary so the pleasure’s in walking through. *Coronavirus Disease 2019: Update in Maryland- 5/31/2020 52,778 confirmed cases  2,532 deaths   3,764 recovered Update in New York State - 5/31/2020 370,770 confirmed cases  29,784 deaths    65,934 recovered Total in United States: 1,790,172 confirmed cases, 104,381 deaths Total Worldwide: 6,166,946 confirmed cases, 372,035 deaths * All numbers are taken from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Re...

100 Days of COVID-19, Day 61

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Read lots of poetry today.  Baked a lemon cake.  Walked around my neighborhood.  Listened to a Toni Morrison interview about racism. Thought about Carroll's poem Jabberwocky.   Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll "Twas brillig, and the slithy toves          Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:  All mimsy were the borogoves,        And the mome raths outgrabe.  “Beware the Jabberwock, my son!        The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!  Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun        The frumious Bandersnatch!”  He took his vorpal sword in hand;        Long time the manxome foe he sought—  So rested he by the Tumtum tree        And stood awhile in thought.  And, as in uffish thought h...

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Sending you warm greetings! Deltiology  - Terminology for the study of postcards.  Taken from Greek   δελτίον ,  deltion , diminutive of  δέλτος ,  deltos , writing tablet, letter; and  -λογία , -logia.  This term was first used by Professor Randall Rhodes of Ashland, Ohio in 1945.  Alternate words for the study of postcards is Cartology and Cartophilist. My Art in the Time of a Pandemic A look back today. Some of the first textiles I transformed into books were African clothing and textiles.  These textiles were gifted to me by the National Museum of African Art library in Washington, DC.  It was an experimental project in which I transformed textiles into one-of-a-kind hard cover books.  I met with a mentor, a senior Smithsonian art historian, a curator and/or conservationist bi-monthly.  They would review my work and offer suggestions.  At the end of fourteen months, I completed twelve books.  Two of these books are in their permanent collection. *Coronavirus Disease 2019: Update in Maryland- 5/17/2020 38,804 confirmed cases  1,992 deaths    2,816 recovered Update in New York State - 5/17/2020 350,121 confirmed cases  28,232 deaths    61,381 recovered Total in United States: 1,486,757 confirmed cases, 89,562 deaths Total Worldwide: ...

100 Days of COVID-19, Day 47

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Sketching my design on fabric. Today I want to give you a glimpse of my embroidery process.   I usually have a clear vision of what the final design or pattern will look like. Therefore, with a permanent fabric marker,  I draw an outline where I want the design to go.  This is done  free hand, directly on the fabric.  It is a little risky.  Any mistake at this critical point can destroy the whole page.  However, over the years, with practice, I've learned to successfully transfer a design directly from my thoughts onto fabric in one step.   It takes me about 400 hours to create one of my books, and if I sketched and planned every single drawing on a separate piece of paper, I would never finish.  *Coronavirus Disease 2019: Update in Maryland- 5/16/2020 37,968 confirmed cases  1,957 deaths    2,806 recovered Update in New York State - 5/16/2020 348,232 confirmed cases...

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Two Postcards and a Mask Today I made my first children's masks and I was reminded of a childhood activity that was very popular decades ago - Pen Pal Programs.  Having a pen pal was a great way to practice penmanship, to learn more about other cultures and lifestyles, and to develop friendships. My life was enriched by writing these letters and receiving them, especially if the pen pal lived in a foreign country.   Therefore, today when I mailed the masks I also included two postcards for the children.  I encouraged the children to write messages on the postcards and mail them to a pen pal.   *Coronavirus Disease 2019: Update in Maryland- 5/15/2020 36,986 confirmed cases  1,911 deaths    2,685 recovered Update in New York State - 5/15/2020 345,813 confirmed cases  27,878 deaths    60,302 recovered Total in United States: 1,442,657 confirmed cases, 87,530 deaths Total W...

100 Days of COVID-19, Day 45

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Face Masks When the CDC recommended wearing face coverings in public to slow the spread of the coronavirus, I had already begun experimenting with different patterns.  The main problem I encountered with some of the available patterns was the fit.  The masks didn't fit snugly or comfortably around my face.  I had to make several adjustments to ensure a proper fit.   This week I went online and found a really nice pattern at  Joann Fabrics'  website.  They also have a "how to" video that shows you how to make shaped face mask with tips for making cloth ties instead of elastic straps.   I've been using various textiles and fabrics from my quilting and book art stash.  These fabrics are much thicker, with tighter weaves than most cotton fabrics.  They also have pleasant, flowery patterns that are cheerful to look at.  And, these days, I like a lot of "cheer." *Coronavirus Disease...

My Art in the Time of a Pandemic Shakespeare Sonnets I've been working on my textile books inspired by Shakespeare Sonnets. My Art in the Time of a Pandemic History at my finger tips. The Spanish explorer with Spain's royal banner in the red background caught my attention.  The 1965 stamp appeared to be European, but it was issued in the United States.  How was this possible?  The stamp commemorated the St. Augustine, Florida settlement of 1565.  It was the first continuous permanent European (Spanish) settlement in the new world. Spain ceded Florida to the US in 1819. *Coronavirus Disease 2019: Update in Maryland- 5/4/2020 26,408 confirmed cases  1,317 deaths   Update in New York State - 5/4/2020 318,953  confirmed cases  24,999 deaths, including 18,925 in NYC Total in United States: 1,180,288 confirmed cases, 68,922 deaths Total Worldwide:       3,582,469 confirmed cases, 251,510 deaths * All numbers are taken from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center
